Seoul’s Hidden Gem
Bukchon Hanok Village is a special place in Seoul where you can experience the essence of Korea. This neighborhood, boasting a 600-year history as the capital, is filled with traditional Hanok houses and typically refers to the area stretching from Gyeongbokgung to Changdeokgung.
Bukchon, meaning ‘neighborhood in the north of Cheonggyecheon and Jongno’, is a Hanok preservation district nestled at the foot of Bukaksan Mountain between Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, and Jongmyo, and is a representative residential area densely populated with traditional Hanoks.
History of Bukchon Hanok Village
Bukchon developed as a residential area for the Yangban class since the Joseon Dynasty, and in the 1930s, with the change in urban structure, a large number of Hanoks were built.
The Hanoks in Bukchon have evolved into a new urban housing type while maintaining the characteristics of traditional Hanoks. Through this process, Bukchon Hanok Village was born as a unique space where Korea’s tradition and modernity coexist.
